, and ohio romney is tight in the races with the states of fluidity, florida and virginia. in florida obama and romney are neck and neck. virginia romney has narrowed the lead from 5 to 2. another statistical tie. in ohio the president has improved his standing. he leads romney there by eight points. and for those wondering about the party idea the sample is less democratic in ohio this time than the last poll. digging deeper into our numbers we divided thet battleground states by three measures. president's job rating. romney's favorability rating that number is still under water he has problems and the question of which candidate is better equipped to manage the economy. remember the unemployment rate is 5.9% in virginia. romney's favorable in florida but under in virginia and ohio. when it comes to who is better able to manage the economy a question on which romney has staked his candidacy romney has a margin of error lead in florida and virginia. the president leads on that question in ohio. with iowa, new hampshire and ohio headed to the obama column that puts the president at 26

become the next president of the united states. >> mitt romney said that on friday when the republican pennsylvania victory plan was still on track. >> voter i.d., which is going to allow governor romney to win the state of pennsylvania. done. >> but a judge today said it's not done. in a huge win for voters rights, the judge blocked the key provision for the voter i.d. law. on election day, pennsylvania voters can be asked for a photo i.d. but are not required to show voter i.d. in order to cast a regular ballot. the judge also ruled that the state can continue its advertising campaign. it worries voters rights activists because they say it could confuse voters. a lawyer told reporters if that message doesn't change, then we may be back in court. voters in pennsylvania have just one week left to register to vote. pennsylvania is the 14th state since 2010 to block or blunt a republican-led restrictive voter law, according to the brennan center. joining me now, msnbc's joy reid, senior correspondent. this was a big win today in that pennsylvania courtroom. >> it absolutely was. it was c

president there. last month, romney trailed the president in that state by five points. a tight race all the way around. new national polls show the race tightening with 34 days to go. head-to-head matchup here. this is nationally. president obama leading 49% to 46% among likely voters. again, within the margin of error and closer than it was two weeks ago. on the direction of the country, 40% say we're heading in the right direction. 53% say things are on the wrong track. 40% is the highest mark for this question in 3 1/2 years. there's also growing optimism about the economy. 57% say it's improving. that's the highest number this poll has recorded on this question. one thing not going the president's way here, his handling of the situations in egypt and libya. more people disapprove than approve on that question. as for mr. romney, it appears he's still paying for the comments about the 47%, 51% of respondents to this nbc poll say recent impressions made by the republican candidate make him less favorable. they view him less favorably. 28% say more favorably. >>> both presidential

presidential debate tonight. mitt romney, he is gaining in two swing states. could this be romney's springboard? romney has whittled the president's lead, take a look. he's whittled the president's lead in the two percentage points in virginia. this is according to a poll released today by marist college, the wall street journal and also nbc news. two-point lead for obama, that's down five points last month. keep in mind we're talking virginia, that's 13 electoral votes there. and check it out, similar story for you in florida. 29 electoral votes there. now, a one-point, one-point lead for obama, down from four points in september. we should mention here that poll shows the president still with the seven-point lead in ohio. we can't forget about ohio. but speaking nationwide here, the president's lead, in our cnn poll of polls, you can see it here, stands at 3 percentage points, unchanged. as we noticed today, kind of interesting, the president has gained one point and romney dropped one point. this is the gallup national tracking poll. obama with a six-point lead there, six-point l
